Pricng may be a key Ingredient of marketing but simply being the cheapest may not always guarantee success. Tata's Nano- the least expensive car in the world, finished last in this Top 10 ranking of passenger vehicle sold in year 2012.The Nano's case is not an isolated one. Models like Ford's Figo & GM Spark-Beat, Hyundai's Eon and Tata's Indica are sold fewer units than more expensive vehicles. The Figo & the Spark do not even figure in Top 10.
The top rank continues to be occupied by Maruti Suzuki's Alto, which sold 2.86 units, though the petrol only model saw volumes shrink by 8% year-on-year as demand shifted towards the Diesel cars. But while the Alto which is the second cheapest car in India at INR 2.32 Lakhs for the the entry level variant - managed to hold on the top position, other vehicles in the same price band did not fare so well. Hyundai's Eon did not fare so well. Hyundai's Eon, which has an ex.-showroom price of INR 2.77 Lakhs, finished 8th with sales of only 93,578 units. The Spark failed to make the cut.
The vehicles immediately following in the Alto in terms of sales are comparatively priced much higher. Maruti's Swift, with a starting price of INR 4.48 Lakhs came in second with sales of 1.86 Lakh units. The Swift infact improves from its 4th rank in 2011(1.27 Lakh units). The 3rd highest is the Dzire, the mid size version of the Swift with an entry of INR 4.92 Lakhs. Mahindra Bolero is another Surprise to this list. But the biggest surprise is the poor response to the Nano considering the kind of over the top marketing Tata did for it.
